Picture Dictionaries

IAD Press’ Picture Dictionaries are recognised as valuable and accessible resources for learning Aboriginal Languages.

IAD Press first started to publish picture dictionaries in 2003. We identified that teaching resources were needed to ensure the preservation of language and culture in Central Australian Aboriginal communities. These dictionaries were designed to increase literacy levels and promote reading for Aboriginal people by producing materials that were relevant to their own expressed needs and interests, invited co-operative learning and were accessible to people in bush communities. You can buy the printed picture dictionaries from the IAD Press website.

This site contains content from the Alyawarr, Eastern and Central Arrernte and Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara picture dictionaries. As well as the original illustrations, the site has audio recordings of people speaking the dictionary entries.
